While Botox addresses wrinkles in the skin caused by underlying muscle contraction, many of the visible signs of facial aging are due to the loss of volume and fullness that comes with the natural breakdown of collagen as we age. Facial fillers (also known as dermal fillers) are typically used for restoring lost volume to these areas due to aging. They add volume, create lift, and help achieve a younger looking, more refreshed version of yourself. Fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that is found in the body. It provides volume and helps bind moisture beneath the skin.

How do facial fillers work?
It comes down to one main ingredient, hyaluronic acid. Wait, what exactly is hyaluronic acid? It is a type of sugar (polysaccharide) that is present between skin cells in the body, and helps retain water. It acts as a skin smoother that also helps to moisturize surface cells. Not only does it provide water to the skin surface, it helps retain it. In fact, it can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, which is why skin that is high in hyaluronic acid looks so young and fresh. As we age, our hyaluronic acid decreases which can lead to facial volume loss and lip thinning. Fillers help to replenish lost volume and are a great anti-aging solution. Hyaluronic acid injections have been shown to last anywhere from 4 to 18 months in the skin depending on location of injection and type of filler used.
What to do before facial fillers?
You must be over 18 to receive injections. We cannot treat patients who are pregnant or nursing. We recommend you do not take any blood thinners or drink alcohol 24 hours before treatment as this can promote bruising. If you are prone to facial cold sores, we recommend taking Valtrex or something similar for a few days before your treatment.
